The Tuttle flash cards are my favourite set because they include a translated phrase on the back. But I'd used the earlier edition of the cards so much that I had worn them out (the corners got frayed to pieces and they'd accumulated coffee stains). The content on this new edition is as good as those old set, but now it is made from tougher laminate that resists creasing and dirt & has rounded corners. That means I can review the cards for weeks & carry them around with me without expecting them to get damaged. It's clear that the set has been designed after a lot of user feedback. They even come with a ring, which is presumably intended to prevent them from getting lost. I don't use that ring because it's inconvient for flipping & re-ordering and is bulky. Still, it would be handy for some students. The actual content of the cards is also a slight improvement from the earlier set, with a hand written type face on the back of the cards as well as the front (but it was fine in the older version too).I've given this five star review after using the cards for about two months and suffering no loss of cards from wear. I bought the box only for the cards, and haven't investigated the CD at all. Since the highest review I can give is five I don't need to know what is on that to complete this review. I'd strongly recommend buying the cards, and a free CD comes with them.
I studied Chinese in college and even as a native speaker I struggled. HARD. Never learnt to read and write but could speak it, however shabbily, but still I could speak Chinese. My biggest struggle was learning HOW to study Chinese and memorize characters, stroke order, pin ying, etc after years of learning language through the use of 26 alphabet letters. This might seem like a non issue to some but trust me when I say it was very difficult at first figuring out how to start from scratch with basically a foreign system of reading and writing and finding a method that was efficient, useful, and more importantly EFFECTIVE.Which is why I wish I had these back in the day. I had looked for something like this but most were just either not as good or less well laid out in terms of providing the information I needed in a form out that was helpful. And forget about me making my own. Believe me I tried. Whether it was my own terrible hand writing throwing me off, it was like the blind leading the blind, or the tedious and time consuming act of making print outs, typed up definitions, etc. then pasting them onto notecards, there just wasn't a convenient method. Then years after my Chinese classes I found these! Wish I had them back then but oh well. What I like about these is that the cards are not too flimsy, small but legible, easy to carry, and most important all the info you need is meticulously well thought out and organized into a very helpful method for quick learning. These cards have the pinying, stroke order directions, traditional AND simplified characters, definitions and even cooler common uses and other characters they are usually paired with. Plus they have the radicals associated with them. For me that was HUGE because somehow I missed the lesson on radicals and went a long time without knowing I had such helpful hints at my disposal.I really can't say enough glowing things about these handy dandy little helpers. Sure in this digital age there may be and probably is some app or program you could use and save some trees while doing so. But selfishly I gotta say there is something about notecards that always helps make learning easier and with these, as corny as it sounds, it makes it fun too! A must have for anyone learning Chinese or even struggling with learning Chinese! JIAAAAAAAAAAAAAYO!
I use these Tuttle flash cards for daily study and they are unbeatable. I own volumes 1-3 and am current halfway through Volume 2.I use an iPhone app (Sticky Study) alongside these cards, and they complement each other very well. For a while I tried using the app only, but came back to the printed cards as my primary learning tool for a few reasons:1. Physical cards are easier to rearrange into mini-stacks, e.g., separating familiar characters from new ones, or creating "daily card stacks" for repeated learning during the day2. These Tuttle cards have large characters which are easy to study - my online tools have too small or poorly rendered characters that are difficult for first-time study when you don't yet know the character well3. Tuttle cards have stroke-by-stroke guide for writing the character4. Each card has 4 well-selected words which use the character in question, and they are usually fairly common ones - my Sticky Study app features some pretty unusual character usages5. The cards are well proof-read and I have not come across obvious printing errors (unlike my online sources which have incorrect tones etc.)I don't personally use the included ringy-thingy as I like to frequently recombine my cards into smaller stacks and I'm afraid of breaking my card corners if I accidentally tear off the card from the ring. I have stacks of 80-100 cards in my work bag in individual Zip-Loc bags which allows me to quickly take them out and flip through them when I have a spare moment. My only criticism is that some of the example sentences are unnecessarily advanced for HSK 1-4 students, but most of them are helpful.Like said, I still use the Sticky Study app on the side. I use it for repetition and quizzing once I'm familiar with the characters (using paper cards for early study). The app is of course much nicer when you are traveling or on the go - I hate traveling with paper. I also like being able to hear the character pronunciation by pressing a button on the app - I have been too lazy to rip the CD that comes with the Tuttle cards, and I'm also finding that after Volume 1 you become familiar enough with pinyin that you don't really need the audio part anyway.
I love these! They come with a ring, on the back the character is broken down into components and radicals and the character is used in a few different sentences to show the meaning. I like that they also give you the Pinyin for the character. One thing I would add is a pronunciation guide, but there are a lot of other tools for that. I bought these to help with character recognition and they work well for that,
