I was a professional astrologer for many years, and had already retired when I started hearing about Chris Brennan’s work. My interest in ancient astrological texts had begun with the brilliant opus of Project Hindsight in the 1990s, which I wholeheartedly supported; but it was Chris Brennan, over a decade later, who reawakened my passion for astrology. I eventually enrolled in Chris’ online Hellenistic Astrology course, and what a wonderful decision that was; now, a distillation of that wealth of knowledge is available to a wide readership.With this comprehensive text, incorporating the history, theory, philosophy and practice of Hellenistic astrology, Chris Brennan has proffered a gift to students and scholars across many disciplines. Each chapter is informed by his focused attention to detail, erudition, respect for nuance, and enlightened approach to ancient traditions.Physically, the book is large but not unwieldy, even at nearly 700 pages. Its slightly oversized format and generous margins make it a pleasure to read, as one doesn’t need to keep one’s hand on a page or set a heavy object on the book in order to keep it open – this is quite helpful for referencing the book while looking at one’s own chart files. Fonts are easily readable, even for my older eyes. Paper quality is excellent, and the lovely cover has a pleasing suedelike texture.The book includes numerous examples of modern charts viewed through a Hellenistic lens, enabling the reader to appreciate the timeless value of ancient techniques. Many clear diagrams and tables are included, and there is a generous index.As a student in Chris’ online classroom, I have been exposed to much of the material here and can vouch for its alignment with the character and content of the course; at the same time, he has streamlined the text to make it easy to explore. The philosophy and history sections go into even greater detail than was possible in early iterations the course.Chris’ prose is at once precise and accessible. He is a skillful communicator, so the reader will have no difficulty in understanding the whys and wherefores behind the whats. I highly recommend this book to serious students of astrology (and related historical disciplines) who wish to broaden their horizons, and at the same time deepen their understanding of this ancient and ageless field.
I haven't gotten very far yet in reading because there is so much information to take in! That's what I love most about this book so far. Little bits here and there send me off on a new research adventure about every time I dive in. Wonderful work!

After covering the philosophical issues, Chris then conducts an exhaustive review of astrology’s main elements: planets, zodiac, aspects and houses.With foundational elements in place, he then addresses the principal concepts and techniques – lordships, bonification and maltreatment, sects, lots, annual profections and zodiacal releasing. The last third of the book is generous with chart examples, both historical and contemporary, to illustrate the principles. As a single volume there’s literally nothing else like it that covers the history, philosophy, concepts and basic techniques in one fell swoop.Who is this book for? Quite simply, everyone who calls themselves an astrologer, or who wants to be one.Whether or not you intend to practice Hellenistic astrology is beside the point. If you’re a western astrologer, this is core material for your tradition, alongside the Persian/Arabic thread that became interwoven with the Hellenistic material into Medieval astrology and its subsequent evolution/devolution into modern western astrology. Vedic astrologers will profit from reading this too, not that it will challenge their allegiances, but because it will demonstrate so much common ground.Chris has done an admirable job in presenting a large body of core material that does more to unite astrologers than divide us. I'm committing the error of writing this review when I'm only 150 pages in to this 650 page tome, because it's been ages since I felt so fascinated by a big, heavy, scholarly book. Chris Brennan is thorough and detailed, and the text has footnotes galore, but he writes with such lucid clarity that it's a pleasure to read.I'm one of the Western astrologers who learned the craft in the New Agey days of the 70s and 80s. I had almost no clue about the ancient practices of Hellenistic astrology. My teachers just didn't know about them--and back then, we didn't have computers to overcome the mathematical demands of the old ways.In more recent decades, hints of the ancient forms have been trickling back into my awareness, and with this book, the floodgates seem to have opened. I have no expectation of being disappointed by the remaining 450 pages or so--hence this somewhat premature review.
I waited for the publication of this book for the past year or so. I was not disappointed. It is a great foundational textbook for those interested in Hellenistic Astrology. Nicely written, the language is clear and straightforward, with every argument supported by a large body of references or evidence. I expect this book to become a classic in the Hellenistic Astrology contemporary literature. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of astrology.

Whether one intends to incorporate Hellenistic techniques into one's practice or not, Chris's book gives a valuable historical overview of Western astrology that is bound to enrich anyone's understanding of this ancient tradition, as well as its philosophical underpinnings.
